Bryngwyn Pupils Enjoy New Experiences in Conjunction with Carmarthenshire Youth Service!

Every Comprehensive School in Carmarthenshire has a full time Youth Worker in partnership with Carmarthenshire Youth Service.  This work complements formal education and offers new experiences and opportunities for pupils.

In 2012 we have been taking part in OCN (Open College Network) Certificates.  These OCN’s have included the following:-

Animal Care

Motorcross and Mechanics

Workshop Safety

Pupils have had the opportunity to work with small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and a tortoise. We have also worked with dogs and donkeys.

Alfie, the Golden Retriever, has become a regular part of school life.  Not only do pupils learn about care and welfare with Alfie, but if anyone is feeling the strain, Alfie is always friendly and eager to make people feel better.

Animals have a therapeutic benefit and can play a huge part in helping people to deal with a number of issues.  Staff and pupils have all enjoyed being able to come and spend time with Alfie.  Pupils have taken Alfie to Hafan y Coed Nursing Home to meet the residents and learn how to run an animal-assisted therapy visit.  Residents and pupils have found this very rewarding.

The motorbike course has proved very popular too and as well as learning to ride, pupils have learnt about mechanics and workshop safety.

These OCN Certificates show that a pupil has undertaken 20 hours of learning and completed workbooks as evidence.
