Jacqueline Jones, School Nurse awarded Community Nurse of the Year 2016

Jacqueline Jones is a registered and qualified Specialist Community Public Health Nurse within the Carmarthenshire School Nursing Team in Hywel Dda University Health Board. She is also the named School Nurse for Bryngwyn Comprehensive School in Llanelli. From December 2014 to June 2016 Jackie has been leading a project in Bryngwyn School with the idea of raising the profile of the School Nurse Role and with the continuous support of Mr Gavin Hayes and the focus group pupils who are now in year 11, Jackie has been able to successfully research and document the views and suggestions of over 152 pupils.

The School Nurse Rucksack is a visual concept that has been the focus of Jackie’s project, aiming to identify the School Nurse as pupils enter school and is used to deliver health promotion lessons on a number of topics affecting our children and young people.

"What is bothering you in your Rucksack?" enables the School Nurse to facilitate sessions on emotional and physical well-being, encouraging pupils to access the service pro-actively and before they reach a crisis. Feedback from pupil questionnaires, assemblies and the focus groups in school confirm that pupils want to know who their School Nurse is, they want to see the school deliver health promotion in class and they will use the "Drop-in" sessions if advertised consistently.

The project has been supported by Bryngwyn School, the health board and the Foundation of Nursing Studies, Patients First Programme London. Following a successful presentation of the project findings in June to the King's Fund London, the team were named finalists in the Nursing Times Awards October 2016 and most recently Jackie has been awarded the Royal College of Nursing Wales, Community Nurse of the Year 2016 for her work in promoting the physical and emotional well-being of the children, young people and their families in our community.

What's next?? The project findings will be published shortly on the FONS website, a national and well recognised website successfully documenting that Health and Education do and can work hand-in-hand in ensuring that all our children and young pupil have every opportunity to reach their potential. Hywel Dda University Health Board have pledged their ongoing support of the School Nurse Rucksack which is going to be introduced to other School Nursing Teams across the whole of the three Counties.
