Pupils 'jockey for position' at Ffos Las!

Pupils from Year 7 and Year 9 were treated to an enjoyable day at Ffos Las when they attended a 'Maths in Action' workshop this week, giving them the opportunity to put their numeracy skills into action.

Activities included estimating and measuring the length of the parade ring, calculating how many horses can safely fit in the parade ring, the maximum and minimum weights for jockeys, estimating weights, using the median as an average, finding the total weight of the jockey's equipment, calculating how much the jockeys earn, working out where a race would finish depending on how long it is and converting between different units both metric and imperial.
They also got to wear jockey's silks, visit the judges box, the weighing room, jockey's lounge, changing room and sauna and have a go on a practice horse.
It was a great day, loads of opportunity to experience maths in action and all pupils and staff thoroughly enjoyed the experience!
