Year 9 STEM Experience down the Bay...

Year 9 pupils thoroughly enjoyed their day out at Swansea University (Bay Campus), where they experienced lectures in bio-sciences, technology, engineering and medicine (STEM).  Pupils that attended were pupils that showed an interest in following these subjects in later life.
The main drive for this event was to widen children’s horizons and help them see their favourite (and not so favourite) subjects in a new light as well as inspire and inform them.
At a crucial time of option choices it allowed the pupils to gain a small insight into different subject areas open to them in the future and in some cases they experienced workshops from the area around their current career choice.
The process of decision making is often influenced by “significant others” and experiences of subjects beyond the school syllabus. While some children have role models among their extended families, friends or teachers they can relate to, others only rely on images promoted by mass media and are bounded by school experience.
The event was aimed to remove this bias to some extent.
