‘ Dragon’s Den’ meets ‘The Apprentice’ at Bryngwyn

On the 19th May, seventy pupils from Years 8 and 9, had the chance to test their entrepreneurial skills in a day long competition to design a new breakfast cereal and deliver a marketing pitch to a team of three business ‘Dragons’ . The winning team were each presented with £5 gift vouchers by Mr Fred Roberts, Chair of Governors, who gave the judges’ summing up.

The day’s activities were presented by staff from ‘Careers West Wales’, who gave the ten teams  their product brief, a new cereal, and gave them the challenge of identifying their market; designing  a product ‘mock up’ packet ; an advertising poster and persuasive drop in flyer for potential customers.  Teams had to think creatively and analytically and fulfil different roles to complete the brief to a tight deadline.

The ‘Dragons’ spent time familiarising themselves with each team’s work and questioning individuals about their marketing strategies and role within the team before the afternoon’s competition. Each team then had to face the ‘Dragons’ onstage; deliver their ‘pitch’ and respond to the sort of questions usually asked by Sir Alan Sugar such as: ’Why should I invest a quarter of a million in you?’ and ‘Was she a good team leader? ’

The winning team members were:  Matthew Honour, George Evans, Stephanie Howells, Gareth Payne, Ellie Corbidge and Coran Thomas of Year 8 plus Matthew Moore, and Scott James Allen from Year 9.  All our pupils were praised by the visiting Dragons for the high standard of the design and marketing materials produced and the quality of their presentations.
