2018 – The Final Countdown

Bryngwyn School continues to deliver excellent outcomes for its learners on the brink of significant changes to education in Wales.

Bryngwyn builds on an outstanding inspection report that stated “highly effective teaching ensures that most pupils make strong

Progress. The quality of care, support and guidance is outstanding.

The school’s culture of celebrating and rewarding achievement is highly successful in engaging pupils and their parents. All of the school’s work is closely focused on enabling each individual pupil to achieve their potential”. In this context:

  • Our top ten pupils achieved a spectacular 122 grades at A* or A grades between them an increase on 2017.
  • The scores on the doors revealed the following high achievement at Bryngwyn:

Rebecca Stephens 10A* 2A plus Dist Add Maths* and A in AS Welsh

Poppy Roberts 9 A* 3.5A plus Dist Add Maths* and A in AS Welsh

Brooke James 8.5 A* 4A 1B

Callum Bowen 7.5A* 5A

Thea Williams 6A* 5.5A 2B

Ffion Bardsley 6A* 5A 1B 1C

*Distinction in Additional Maths

  • 37 pupils, almost 20% of the cohort, achieved 5 or more GCSEs at A* to A. An outstanding achievement.

The New Welsh Bac:

  • 92% achieved the new Welsh Bac Skills Challenge Certificate, a new additional GCSE qualification for pupils. An amazing 86% of the year group achieved A*-C in this new subject.

Significant progress was made in meeting the demands of modern society and meeting our 21st Century skills agenda;

  • 96% of pupils studying Separate Sciences achieved A*-C grades with over 53% achieving A*or A grades.
  • 48% of pupils achieved A*-A in ICT GCSE with 83% achieving grade B or above.
  • 33% of pupils achieved A*- A in Electronics GCSE with 78% achieving grade B or above.
  • 43% of pupils studying Additional Maths in Year 11 obtained the highest award “Distinction” grades.
  • 20 subjects achieved 100% pass rate reflecting an ESTYN inspection that stated: “The quality and breadth of learning experiences are a significant strength. The school provides a broad and balanced curriculum that fully meets the needs and interests of all pupils. This has a significant impact on pupils’ standards and wellbeing.
  • Welsh, identified as an excellent feature of the school by Estyn, recorded that 83% of all year 11 pupils achieved A* to C grades, with 37% obtaining an A* or A grade! In addition, 20 out of 26 pupils in Year 9 achieved A* and A grades in Welsh Second Language GCSE 2  years early. All 26 pupils achieved a GCSE an A*-C grade! Ardderchog!
  • No pupils left without a recognised qualification for the 10th year in succession!

Our staff are very proud of the commitment this year group demonstrated on the lead up to their exams and the positive attitude they displayed throughout their five years at Bryngwyn. They wish them all the very best with all their future plans and aspirations.

Paul Jones the Executive Headteacher commented “I would like to praise the amazing efforts of all pupils and parents in giving their wholehearted support to both schools during a very busy year. Especially this year, with the uncertainty and challenge presented by the introduction of new specifications. Our staff have risen to meet this challenge and through hard work and careful planning have delivered improved outcomes across the curriculum”

Rebecca Stephens, Head Girl  achieved  10A* 2A;

“I feel ecstatic with my results! I couldn’t have done it without the support and care of my teachers and friends during my time at Bryngwyn. This is an exciting time for all of us!”

Callum Bowen, Head Boy, who achieved 7.5A* and 5 A grades commented;  

“This is an incredible feeling. I am really grateful for all the help I received in helping me to achieve these results and to do the best I could”
