Lucky Lucy Wins Prize At ‘Youth Speaks’Competition

Both Bryngwyn’s senior and junior debating teams swung into action on Tuesday 17th January, in the first round of the annual ‘Youth Speaks’ competition. The competition was kindly organised by Llanelli Rotary Club and held in the beautiful surroundings of the old Town Hall conference chamber.

Junior team members were Year 9 pupils Lucy Havard, Alex Mitchell and Ryan Davies. They debated: ‘Is text talk and internet spelling the new English?’ Year 11 senior team members Sara Jenkins, William Bonnell and David Hughes debated: ‘The voting age should be lowered to sixteen’. Both teams argued their cases fluently and effectively and benefited from the opportunity to present their arguments to a panel of judges and an appreciative audience.

Whilst Bryngwyn’s winning streak over recent years deserted the senior team, despite sound performances, Lucy Havard clinched the prize for Best Junior Chairperson. This was especially remarkable as she had to take over the role on the day of the competition. Our congratulations go to St John Lloyd Seniors who won the best team prize and Coedcae Juniors who won best team prize. We now have time to plan for next year and get those winning team trophies back to Bryngwyn!
